Speed Training: Protect Quality With Full Recovery

Speed training is not conditioning with shorter intervals. The goal is to produce high-quality acceleration or maximal velocity with mechanics that stay organized. When rest is too short, the session shifts toward fatigue tolerance and repeated-sprint conditioning.
Warm up progressively with easy movement, dynamic range, skips or drills that fit the athlete, and several accelerations that increase in intensity. The first true sprint should not be the first fast movement of the day.
Keep repetitions short enough to preserve intent. Acceleration work may use 10- to 30-meter efforts; maximal-velocity work often needs a gradual build-up before a short fast zone. Take long rests—often several minutes—so the next repetition can be genuinely fast. Stop when times slow meaningfully or mechanics deteriorate.
Strength and power training can support speed, but sprinting remains specific. Lower-body strength gains can transfer positively to sprint performance, while repeated-sprint training can improve speed, intermittent running ability, aerobic fitness, change of direction, and jump performance. Choose the method based on the sport’s demand.
High-speed running creates substantial tissue stress. Progress weekly sprint distance gradually, avoid sudden spikes, and separate demanding sprint sessions with adequate recovery.
