Your Weekly Wellness Check-In: Four Questions Before You Train

A wellness check-in does not need an app, a wearable, or a complicated readiness score. Its purpose is to notice trends and make better training decisions before performance drops sharply.

Ask four questions once or twice each week. How has my sleep been? How high is my life stress? How sore or painful does my body feel? How motivated do I feel to train? Rate each from one to five using the same definitions every time. The number is less important than the change from your normal pattern.

Interpret patterns, not one bad morning. A single low score may reflect a late night or a stressful meeting. Several low scores together—especially with declining performance—support a smaller training day. Reduce sets, avoid maximal efforts, choose technique work, or use easy aerobic movement.

Pair subjective ratings with one simple performance marker when useful: warm-up bar speed, a submaximal jump, resting heart rate, or how a familiar pace feels. Technology can add information, but no device measures the full context of sleep, nutrition, illness, pain, and emotional stress.

Write down the adjustment and the outcome. Over time, you learn which signals matter most for you. The goal is not to avoid hard training; it is to place hard training where you can benefit from it.

Persistent exhaustion, major mood changes, unexplained performance loss, or concerning physical symptoms should not be managed only with a readiness score. Seek qualified medical or mental-health support when needed.
