Mobility vs. Flexibility: Train the Difference

Flexibility describes how far a joint or muscle can move passively. Mobility describes how well you can actively control useful range of motion. Touching your toes may show available range, but a controlled squat also requires strength, coordination, balance, and joint-specific motion.

Start with the task. If your heel rises during a squat, ankle range may be relevant, but stance, foot control, hip structure, balance, and technique also matter. A single stretch is not a complete assessment.

Static stretching can improve range of motion, especially when practiced consistently. Full-range resistance training can also improve flexibility while building strength in the newly available range. Recent reviews suggest that well-designed resistance training may produce range-of-motion gains comparable with stretching in healthy adults.

Use dynamic movement in a warm-up: controlled lunges, arm circles, squat variations, or gradual rehearsal of the exercise. Save longer static stretches for a separate mobility block or after training when they help a specific goal. Avoid long, intense stretching immediately before maximal speed or power work if it reduces performance.

The goal is not maximum range everywhere. Build enough comfortable, controlled range for your sport and daily life. Pain, locking, instability, or sudden loss of motion deserves professional assessment.
