Progressive Overload: Change One Variable at a Time

Progressive overload means gradually increasing the challenge placed on the body so it has a reason to adapt. It does not mean adding weight every workout forever. Load, repetitions, sets, range of motion, exercise complexity, movement speed, frequency, and rest periods can all change the training demand.

Start by defining the goal. For general strength, a useful progression is to keep the exercise and repetition range stable, then add repetitions before adding weight. If the target is 6 to 10 repetitions, begin with a load you can control for six. When all sets reach ten with good technique and an appropriate effort, increase the load slightly.

Volume should rise slowly. Adding weight, sets, exercises, and training days in the same week makes fatigue harder to interpret. Change one primary variable, observe the response for at least a few sessions, and keep the change only if performance and recovery remain acceptable.

Technique is part of overload. A deeper squat performed with control or a push-up through a larger pain-free range may be meaningful progress even if the external weight is unchanged. Likewise, completing the same work with less perceived effort is an adaptation.

Use a log. Record the exercise, weight, repetitions, sets, and an effort rating. Progress becomes easier to see, and plateaus become easier to troubleshoot.
